Socrata Discovery API
Public recordsapi.us.socrata.com
A federated catalogue of the open-data assets published across thousands of Socrata / Tyler Data & Insights government portals, searchable by keyword, portal, category, tag, owner, licence or asset ID, and returning each asset's full column schema, update history, popularity and permalink.
Capabilities (13)
GET /v1/data/socrata/asset-metadata1 creditFull catalogue record for one or more Socrata assets looked up by four-by-four ID, including the complete column schema (names, field names, datatypes, descriptions), the portal's custom metadata fields, update and publication timestamps and the canonical permalink.
GET /v1/data/socrata/assets-by-name1 creditAssets whose title matches the supplied string exactly, which surfaces the same dataset as published by many different portals.
GET /v1/data/socrata/attribution-assets1 creditAssets whose metadata credits a given organisation as the source, regardless of which portal hosts them.
GET /v1/data/socrata/autocomplete1 creditAsset titles matching a partial query, each returned with the matched character offsets, for type-ahead over the catalogue.
GET /v1/data/socrata/category-assets1 creditAssets filed under a given category, across every indexed portal by default or within one portal when a search context is supplied.
GET /v1/data/socrata/derived-assets1 creditThe charts, maps, filtered views and other assets that portal users have built on top of a given source dataset, each with its own metadata and permalink.
GET /v1/data/socrata/domain-assets1 creditEvery asset published on one Socrata portal, with full metadata for each - title, description, four-by-four ID, asset type, owner, column list, page views and permalink.
GET /v1/data/socrata/domain-categories1 creditEvery category used on one portal with the number of assets filed under each.
GET /v1/data/socrata/domain-tag-assets1 creditAssets on one portal carrying a given tag from that portal's own tag vocabulary, with full metadata for each.
GET /v1/data/socrata/domain-tags1 creditEvery tag used on one portal with the number of assets carrying each, ordered by count.
GET /v1/data/socrata/licence-assets1 creditAssets whose publisher-entered licence field matches the supplied string exactly, returned with the same full metadata as a search result. The field is free text typed by the publishing agency, not a validated licence identifier.
GET /v1/data/socrata/owner-assets1 creditEverything published by one Socrata user account, across the portals that account publishes to.
GET /v1/data/socrata/search1 creditFull-text search across every asset indexed in the Socrata federated catalogue, returning each asset's title, description, four-by-four ID, owner, column names and datatypes, page views, update timestamps and the permalink on its home portal.
Licence
No blanket licence covers this catalogue. The Discovery API federates metadata from thousands of independently operated Socrata / Tyler Data & Insights portals and the terms are per-record: every result carries its own "metadata": {"license": ...} string set by the publishing agency. Values seen in live responses (2026-10-22) include "See Terms of Use" (e.g. data.cityofchicago.org/ijzp-q8t2), "Public Domain" and null; they are not interchangeable and none of them governs the catalogue as a whole. The only written reuse statement the operator publishes is the footer of its developer documentation site, and it is non-commercial: dev.socrata.com reads verbatim "Licensed by Tyler Technologies under CC BY-NC-SA 3.0.", with rel="license" pointing at http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/deed.en_US. That covers the documentation site, not the data, and nothing on dev.socrata.com or tylertech.com grants commercial reuse or redistribution of catalogue metadata. commercialUse and redistribution are therefore both false: we pass the metadata through claiming nothing, and each record's own license field plus the linked portal's terms of use are what actually govern reuse of the asset behind it.

Display this wherever you show the data. It arrives on every response as provenance.attribution_text.
Metadata from the Socrata Discovery API (Tyler Technologies, Data & Insights). Each record remains subject to the licence and terms of use of the portal that publishes it.
