IMF Data
Statisticsapi.imf.org
The International Monetary Fund's official statistics service: consumer prices, balance of payments, direction of trade, government finance, monetary and financial statistics, exchange rates, primary commodity prices, the World Economic Outlook database and around 225 other datasets, served as SDMX 3.0 time series for roughly 200 economies.
Capabilities (16)
GET /v1/data/imfdata/availability1 creditReturns the codes that actually carry data for one dimension of a dataflow, narrowed by a partial series key, plus the dataset's series count and the first and last period it covers.
GET /v1/data/imfdata/categorisations1 creditReturns the 111 categorisation records that attach each dataflow to a category in the subject tree, as pairs of source and target URNs.
GET /v1/data/imfdata/categoryscheme1 creditReturns the IMF's subject taxonomy as a tree of categories, and with references=parentsandsiblings also the dataflows filed under each one.
GET /v1/data/imfdata/codelist1 creditReturns one codelist with every code in it and each code's English name, which is how a dimension value such as USA or M is turned into a label.
GET /v1/data/imfdata/codelists1 creditReturns stubs for every codelist on the service, each with its agency, id, version and name, without the codes themselves.
GET /v1/data/imfdata/conceptscheme1 creditReturns one concept scheme with each concept's id, name and description, which is the definition of what a dimension or attribute actually measures.
GET /v1/data/imfdata/conceptschemes1 creditReturns stubs for all 2,240 concept schemes on the service, each with its agency, id, version and name.
GET /v1/data/imfdata/data1 creditReturns the actual observations for a dataflow filtered by a series key and a time range, as an SDMX-JSON data message carrying the dimension values, the observed values and their attributes.
GET /v1/data/imfdata/dataconstraint1 creditReturns one data constraint with the cube regions it defines, i.e. the dimension values a dataset actually constrains its published series to.
GET /v1/data/imfdata/dataconstraints1 creditReturns stubs for the 4 data constraint records published on the service (3 distinct ids, all under the ISORA agency), each with its agency, id, version and name.
GET /v1/data/imfdata/dataflow1 creditReturns one dataflow's name, full description, version, last-updated timestamp and presentation annotations, and with references=children the data structure and codelists behind it.
GET /v1/data/imfdata/dataflows1 creditReturns every dataflow the IMF publishes — 351 rows covering 225 distinct dataset ids — each with its agency, id, version, English name and the full dataset description.
GET /v1/data/imfdata/datastructure1 creditReturns one DSD: its dimensions in key order with their key positions, the measures, the attributes and the codelist each dimension draws on.
GET /v1/data/imfdata/datastructures1 creditReturns stubs for all 622 data structure definitions on the service, each with its agency, id, version and name, so a dataflow's DSD id can be found.
GET /v1/data/imfdata/hierarchies1 creditReturns stubs for all 344 code hierarchies on the service, the structures that nest codes inside one another such as CPI components or country groupings.
GET /v1/data/imfdata/hierarchy1 creditReturns one hierarchy with its nested hierarchical codes, showing which codes sit under which parent.
Licence
The IMF’s Copyright and Usage terms carry a "Special Terms for Statistical Data (“Data”)" section that covers exactly what this provider serves: it names "IMF Statistical Data, including but not limited to, International Financial Statistics (IFS), Balance of Payments (BOP), Direction of Trade (DOT), and Government Finance Statistics (GFS)", the "World Economic Outlook database", "Primary Commodity Prices", "IMF Financial Data", "Exchange Rate Data", and "Most statistical data available on www.IMF.org, www.data.IMF.org, or the iData Portal that explicitly identify the International Monetary Fund as the source." For that Data the page states: "Users may download, extract, copy, create derivative works, publish, distribute, and use Data obtained from IMF Sites subject to these conditions:" — the conditions being that "Distributed or reproduced Data must appear accurately with attribution to the IMF as the source, e.g. “Source: International Monetary Fund, Database Name, <<link to the dataset>>.”"; that "Users shall not infringe upon the integrity of the Data and shall refrain from any act of alteration of the Data that intentionally affects its nature or accuracy. If material transformation occurs, it must be stated explicitly along with the required source citation."; that redistributors "agree to take reasonable efforts to communicate and promote compliance by their users with these terms"; and that "If IMF Data is sold by Users as a standalone product, sellers must inform purchasers that the Data is available free of charge from the IMF." Redistribution is therefore granted in writing, conditional on attribution — redistribution is true. Commercial use is NOT granted: the same section closes "For any potential commercial reuse of IMF Data, email copyright@imf.org to request permission", which is a permission process and not a licence, so commercialUse is false. Two prohibitions in the general terms bind any caller regardless: "The IMF prohibits bulk download of information by automated technology without explicit permission and reserves the right to terminate access to its Sites or Content", and "The IMF does not permit use of its Content or Sites for the training of large language models (LLMs) without explicit permission." We therefore proxy individual live SDMX queries against the IMF’s own published machine API and keep no corpus; callers who want commercial reuse, bulk harvesting, or model training must obtain that permission from copyright@imf.org themselves. Note that this grant is specific to statistical Data: for IMF Content that is not Data the general terms are far narrower, permitting only "Free non-systematic downloading and/or printing of Content for personal, noncommercial usage only ... without any right to resell, redistribute, compile, or create derivative works". The page also warns that "For material not attributed to the IMF, users should obtain permission directly from the respective third-party copyright holder."
