ACIS (NOAA Regional Climate Centers)

WeatherUS

data.rcc-acis.org

Daily and monthly US climate observations and gridded climate data from the Applied Climate Information System operated by the six NOAA Regional Climate Centers: station temperature, precipitation, snowfall, snow depth and degree days back to the 1800s, plus PRISM and NRCC interpolated grids and the county, climate-division, river-basin and NWS forecast-office boundaries used to select them.

Capabilities (10)

GET /v1/data/acis/area-boundary1 credit

Returns the name, bounding box and GeoJSON MultiPolygon outline of one county, climate division, NWS forecast office, river basin or state, identified by its code.

areaid
GET /v1/data/acis/area-metadata1 credit

Lists the counties, climate divisions, NWS forecast offices or river basins that fall within a state, each with its identifier and name.

areastatemeta?
GET /v1/data/acis/area-station-data1 credit

Returns the requested climate elements for every station in a state over a date range, one block of daily values per station, each with that station's metadata.

statesdateedateelemsmeta?county?climdiv?cwa?basin?
GET /v1/data/acis/bbox-station-data1 credit

Returns the requested climate elements over a date range for every station inside a longitude/latitude bounding box, one block of values per station.

bboxsdateedateelemsmeta?
GET /v1/data/acis/grid-area-data1 credit

Returns the full grid of climate values inside a longitude/latitude bounding box for each date in a range, as latitude bands of longitude values, optionally with the coordinates of every cell.

bboxsdateedategridelemsmeta?
GET /v1/data/acis/grid-point-data1 credit

Returns a day-by-day series of gridded climate values for the grid cell nearest a longitude/latitude, from PRISM, the NRCC interpolated grid, NRCC Hi-Res or the multi-sensor precipitation estimate.

locsdateedategridelemsmeta?
GET /v1/data/acis/station-data1 credit

Returns the day-by-day observed values of the requested climate elements for one weather station over a date range, with the station's name, state, coordinates and elevation.

sidsdateedateelemsmeta?
GET /v1/data/acis/station-metadata1 credit

Returns the name, state, county, climate division, coordinates, elevation, every cross-network identifier and the valid date range per element for one or more named stations.

sidselemssdate?edate?date?
GET /v1/data/acis/stations-in-area1 credit

Lists every ACIS station in a state, with name, coordinates, elevation, county FIPS, climate division and all cross-network ids, optionally narrowed to a county, climate division, NWS forecast office or river basin within it.

statecounty?climdiv?cwa?basin?elems?sdate?edate?date?
GET /v1/data/acis/stations-in-bbox1 credit

Lists every ACIS station inside a longitude/latitude bounding box, with name, coordinates, elevation, county FIPS, climate division and all cross-network ids.

Licence

ACIS publishes no reuse grant. Its only terms page, "Terms of Use and Disclaimer", is a liability and data-quality notice: "Climate products and tools are developed by the Regional Climate Centers to provide users with a means to routinely access recent weather and climate data. While applied research has demonstrated that the use of such data in decision making can reduce risk and lower a user's cost, it must be pointed out that near-real-time data are preliminary in nature and sometimes contain errors. Although care is taken to remove known errors, it is possible that some data will change after receipt of written records and final quality control steps. Users are therefore forewarned to consider any negative impact that errant data might have on their business and use preliminary data and information at their own risk"; "The Regional Climate Centers are not responsible for the misuse or abuse of data provided through our services."; "Through use of the data services through the ACIS website, you automatically agree to the terms of use and disclaimer." The site footer asserts the opposite of an open licence: "2017 (c) Regional Climate Centers. ALL Rights Reserved." Nothing on the site permits commercial use or redistribution in writing, so both are set false and we pass the data through claiming nothing. The underlying records are also mixed provenance and licensed per dataset, not blanket: NWS/NCEI station observations are US Government public-domain works, but the RCCs themselves are university-hosted (Cornell, LSU, DRI, Illinois, Nebraska, North Carolina) rather than federal agencies, and the PRISM grids (grid=21) are produced by the PRISM Climate Group at Oregon State University under their own terms. A caller who needs redistribution rights must go to the originating dataset, not to ACIS.
